There are bad arguments, and then there are bad arguments whose consequences stretch far beyond the case in which they were made. The defense of Lindsay Clancy, accused of murdering her three young children, raises precisely that kind of problem. If postpartum hormones and psychiatric distress can diminish criminal responsibility, where does compassion end and accountability begin? More importantly, what happens when the reasoning offered to excuse one woman is applied to women everywhere?

That is the uncomfortable territory Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod enter in this episode of What the Frock? The conversation is deliberately provocative because the implications are difficult to ignore. An argument intended to protect a particular defendant may also revive assumptions women spent generations overcoming: that hormones make them unreliable, emotionally unstable, or unsuitable for positions involving judgment, authority, and public safety. Once biology becomes a defense against responsibility, it can just as easily become a justification for discrimination.

From there, the discussion moves into the wider theater of political absurdity. Canada is outraged by President Trump’s effort to rename Lake Ontario, apparently discovering a newfound reverence for historical names after years of renaming streets, universities, public buildings, and civic landmarks. Threats involving Canadian electricity and the continuing trade dispute only add another layer to a quarrel in which symbolism frequently seems more important than practical consequences.

Along the way, there is Facebook Marketplace at two in the morning, an unexpectedly complicated English muffin and the usual effort to determine whether society has lost its mind or merely misplaced it temporarily.
